The aim of the Kirwan High Sports Academy is to provide passionate athletes with the opportunity to improve their performance and to excel in their chosen sport.
Through the Sports Academy students will:
develop high levels of athleticism and sports specific performance skills.
value personal excellence.
achieve high quality outcomes.
Academy students will also undergo fitness profiling and have targeted training programs developed by Sports Scientists.
In Year 7 and 8, students will participate in a general athletic development program. In Year 9 to 12 they will have the opportunity to specialise in a specific Sports Academy or remain in the General Academy.

Athletic Development
All Sports Academy students have access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities and utilise cutting edge athletic development practices and programs. These programs are tailored for athletes as they develop through their athletic stages of adolescence underpinned by long term athletic development. Sports Academy students are exposed to expert and high performance coaches across the specialised programs. Staff include High Performance Coaching accredited coaches and representative coaches across the various programs.

Sports Academy students will also have the opportunity to participate in local, state, national and international competitions and tours such as:
- AFL - Queensland School Cup
- Basketball - Champion Basketball School Queensland
- Football - Bill Turner Cup and the Chelsea Football Club
- development tour to Bangkok
- Hockey - Queensland All Schools and Regional Tours
- Netball - Vicki Wilson Cup
- Rugby League - National Schoolboys Cup and the Karen
- Murphy Cup (girls), Fiji Tour, Sydney Tour and South East Queensland Tours
- Touch Football – North Queensland and Queensland All Schools
- Volleyball – North Queensland Cup, Senior Schools Cup and Townsville Classic
- Townsville Secondary School Sport Block Sport.

Students have achieved numerous individual honours including Olympic Change Maker Awards, representation in national sides, and amazing results in their chosen sport. Throughout our history, Kirwan High has won national and state titles.
