Kirwan State High School library aims to provide a service rich, inviting and comfortable physical environment that enables and advances a dynamic range of activities for students and staff for the purposes of information and knowledge seeking, contemplation and recreation. Our aim is to provide a resource collection that connects students with the 21st Century world. Students have access to resources which meets their broad range of interests and needs, in a welcoming, safe, learning environment.

The library is open 8.15am–4.30pm, including both lunches. There are established areas for individual study, computer use, board and card games and individual reading during these times. Homework assistance is provided after school Tuesday through to Thursday.

Our library contains a number of flexible learning spaces and facilities which provide access to all library resources including computers and a high quality printer/photocopier/scanner, as well as wifi to support the school laptop and BYOX program.

The library staff offer assistance to students and staff in a number of areas, including the selection of current and appropriate reading and curriculum resources, instruction in the location and use of such resources, development of information literacy skills and assistance with the selection of reading materials. Students may borrow resources for a two week period.

Our collection contains extensive print and digital resources, including:

  • Regularly updated fiction, manga and graphic novels to encourage and promote reading for learning and leisure.
  • Current non-fiction and e-books to support curriculum needs and general interest reading.
  • Daily newspapers and magazines to cater for curriculum needs and personal interest.
  • Reference collection, for that quick fact.
  • A range of online databases, allowing students to connect 24/7 to a wealth of online content.
  • A selection of DVDs and online streaming to support the curriculum.

Access to these resources is provided through a fully-automated library management system encompassing the library catalogue, which can be accessed anywhere in the school, as well as on ipads in the library.
