Arrival in Townsville
At the airport you will be met by your Homestay family and the International Student Support Coordinator. Look for the people who are holding a sign with your name on it. You will be given a welcome information pack that will give you more information about Kirwan State High School, our Orientation Day and the Townsville region.
School uniform
School uniform requirements will be in your welcome pack on your arrival at the Townsville Airport. Information is also available on the Kirwan High website.
Education in the tropics
Kirwan State High School is located in the regional city of Townsville, the largest city in North Queensland. Townsville is located on the eastern coast of Queensland, with Magnetic Island and the Great Barrier Reef to the east, historic Charters Towers and outback Queensland to the west.
There are over 2000 students from Year 7 through to Year 12 at Kirwan State High School. Students’ ages are from 13 years old to 17 years old.
International students
Kirwan State High School's International program offers a rich, learning opportunity for overseas students. Students from European, Asian and Pacific countries enjoy full immersion into school life. They participate in a strong academic program and a wide range of extra-curricular activities, whilst learning and improving their English language. Tutorial support (ESL and subject support) is provided.
International students are included in all aspects of school life and meet regularly together as a group. This contributes to their successful integration into our school community.
International students develop long lasting friendships with local students and also their Homestay families.
Curriculum
Kirwan State High School has a high quality English curriculum which caters for students who have English as a second language. The school’s academic diversity can be measured by the range of academic, vocational, sporting, performing arts subjects and the successful outcomes achieved in local, state and national competitions.
Program delivery
Kirwan State High School provides quality education to international students ensuring there are no obstacles to students fully participating in curriculum opportunities at the school. The students are also encouraged to engage in the school’s extra-curricular activities to gain the best possible schooling experience.
